NES Scholars: In Their Own Words

New England Society Scholarships offer more than financial assistance. They also lend confidence and provide a sense of achievement to these young scholars. Below are comments from NES Scholars, current and past, about the impact the NES Scholarships have made.

Lai Hau, Tufts University, Class of 2013

I had an amazing first semester at Tufts! I made plenty of new friends, joined a few clubs at school, had a lot of fun, and studied hard. I learned that I was more headstrong and independent than I thought I was. I am part of the Culinary Society, Leonard Carmichael Society (community service group), and Tufts Mountain Club. Next semester, I will start tutoring an elementary school student, working with kids at an afterschool program, and possibly working with children with disabilities. I also plan on hiking in New Hampshire with the Mountain Club when the weather gets warmer. I also spent many nights and weekends in the library reading textbooks, writing papers, and doing homework. I want to thank the New England Society for granting me the scholarship. Without the help from you all, I wouldn’t have had such an amazing first semester.”

Adrianne, Bowdoin, Class of 2014

I wanted to let the board know what classes I am taking my first semester at Bowdoin College. My schedule consists of Chemistry, Environmental Studies, Spanish, my first year seminar, The Real Life of Literature (an English coarse,) as well as a modern dance class. At the moment I am pre-med and very excited about what the Science and Mathematics departments here at Bowdoin have to offer. However, in the spring I hope to take a Gender and Woman's Studies class as well as possibly an Education class. I already feel very at home on campus and can tell, after only one day of classes, that I am going to college at a very special place. I have never been in a more inspiring and challenging yet noncompetitive and friendly learning environment. I am so very grateful for this opportunity and the New England Society's support.

Lilly, Wellesley College, Class of 2011

I'm really grateful for the Society's help throughout the years and for their continued support in my last year at Wellesley. I'll always remember how instrumental your support is to my academic happiness. Thank you!

Eric, Harvard University, Class of 2010

I would like to thank the New England Society for making me the recipient of its scholarship. Receiving this scholarship has truly been a blessing. It has taken a huge load off my shoulders; thus, I am able to focus more on my academics, instead of having to focus on making them possible. I am truly thankful and will sincerely be forever grateful.

Brian, Middlebury College, Class of 2008

I am writing to inform you as to how my first year at Middlebury College turned out, and to thank you for making it possible for me to attend such a wonderful school. I kept myself very busy during my first year of college and often had a large list of things to do and events to attend that would end up consuming over 24 hours in one day! I would not be able to attend this institution without placing an overwhelmingly large financial burden on my father were it not for your help. Thank you very much!

Seekqumarie, Wheaton College, Class of 2007

Wow, where should I begin? I must thank the Aid to Education Committee. I would also like to thank the Society and each and every person who played a role in selecting me for the scholarship. One thing that I am extremely proud of has to be my past summer accomplishment. I worked at Wheaton as an Orientation Coordinator. A large portion of my job dealt with putting together the text for the Orientation booklet. Receiving this scholarship is a blessing, and I want to thank you once again for having such a scholarship.

Sergey, Boston College, Class of 2006

Thanks to the New England Society’s support through your scholarship program, I was able to make the most of my degree program. I wanted to let you know that I graduated magna cum laude from Boston College this past May. I was fortunate enough to have secured a position as an IT consultant for a reputable New York City firm whilst still in school. I can’t thank you enough for the opportunity you have given me and I will be sure to keep you informed of my progress through my career.

Allison, Bowdoin College, Class of 2005

Immediately following my graduation from Bowdoin, I went back to work at Memorial Sloane-Kettering Cancer Center. Among other projects, I currently coordinate a study that provides online symptom and site-effect reporting for patients undergoing chemotherapy for lung cancer. As the study unfolds, I will manage its expansion to include three additional clinics within the hospital, monitoring a total of 300 patients. I am deeply indebted to the New England Society in the City of New York who provided their generous support throughout my undergraduate years. I think often and fondly of NESNYC and hope to remain a part of your community for many years to come.

Larry, Colby College, Class of 2004

I've been working with the American India Foundation in New York since November '08. They raise money in the United States for partner NGOs in India working in the fields of education, livelihood and health care. They also offer a 10-month fellowship recently renamed the Clinton Fellowship for Service in India. I applied and was accepted. I will be leaving for India in September, and will be working with an organization called Nidan, helping them with waste management. Since graduating Colby, I've been busy trying to see how best to address the problem of solid waste management in India's rapidly urbanizing cities, and this fellowship will help with that greatly. Of course, none of this would be possible without the assistance of the NESNYC during my years at Colby.
